DIFFUSION FILTERS

Glimmerglass
by Tiffen 1/4 - 1/2 - 1 - 2
4 x 5.65" - 4mm
Effect: controlled specular halation with no reduction in sharpness -- creates a natural glow around light
Feeling: subtle glimmer / airy spacial presence
. From Tiffen: Glimmerglass is a line of diffusion filters that produces a soft clean halation around practical and specular light sources, while keeping an apparent sharpness on the overall image. On close ups, the apparent sharpness and fine detail is kept as the effect of the filter lowers contrast while softly rolling into the shadow area. This low contrast affect moderately mutes bright colors. This makes the lower end of the glimmer glass diffusion line produce a non-destructive or invasive look. Even at heavier densities, the filter never becomes overly powerful in its spread of halation. The Glimmerglass series of filters also has a benefit of sparkling when viewed, which can add reassurance to your talent when shooting beauty; that way you can fully concentrate on the look of your shot.

Black Diffusion FX
by Tiffen 1/2 - 1 - 2 - 3
4 x 5.65" - 4mm
Effect: refined sharpness reduction with no reduction in contrast -- smooths out skin and hyperdetail
Feeling: smooth edges / hospitable filmic details
. From Tiffen: Black Diffusion/FX, is a distinctive yet simple diffusion filter, as it is refined in its ability to reduce fine sharp detail and produce a minimal effect on bounced and reduced highlights. The Black Diffusion/FX look, is apparent by its seemingly non-destructive effect, meaning that any reduction in color saturation is kept to a minimum. When used on close ups, facial features, such as eyes and hair remain sharp on the focal plane while finer and unwanted skin detail smoothly blends away. Black Diffusion is kept in check by what is embedded in the filter, performing the jewel role in controlling the optical softening element form overly blurring specular highlights, which might otherwise cause stronger halation.

Pearlescent
by Tiffen 1/8 - 1/4 - 1/2
4 x 5.65" - 4mm
Effect: fine detail smoothing and halation -- uniformly softens skin and emanates a soft contrast falloff
Feeling: silky glow / attractive ethereal mist
. From Tiffen: Pearlescent can be applied to purposely soften contrast and reduce sharpness. This can be useful for high-resolution digital cinematography in order to create a more flattering result of a subject by reducing the appearance of blemishes and softening highlights. Additionally, a pearlescent halo around highlights is created which can further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect. Even at its lowest strength of 1/8, the components that go into making up a pearlescent get to work on producing a lush, velvety look to the images. The rich, lush and glamorous look of a pearlescent takes effect cleaning out the fine detail in the skin, while an apparent sharpness remains in the eyes. The end result in close-ups is pleasing, beautiful skin complexion.
NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTERS

IRND - Firecrest Ultra
by Formatt-Hitech 0.3 - 0.6 - 0.9 - 1.2 - 1.8 - 2.1
4 x 5.65" - 2mm
Effect: neutral exposure reduction
. From Formatt-Hitech: With Firecrest, we now offer the most neutral ND filters on the market. Firecrest is a revolutionary ND filter technology from Formatt-Hitech. Rather than dyed resin, Firecrest is a rare earth metal coating used to create hyper neutral NDs. These ND filter coatings are protected between two layers of Schott Superwite glass. Each filter is IRND, hydrophobic, anti-reflective, and extremely flare resistant. Each Firecrest photography filter is IRND, meaning you don’t have to worry about color casts, so you can just concentrate on your photography. The light is always filtered evenly, including the Infra-Red spectrum, removing the risk of color casts, giving you the true colors in your images. These slim filters can be stacked, 2 to a standard 4x5.65" filter tray.

SOFT GRAD ND
by Kase Optics 0.6
4 x 5.65" - 1.1mm
Effect: horizontally-graduated neutral exposure reduction, from clear to 2-stops ND
. From Kase Optics: It darkens specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle allowing you to darken the sky with no effect on the land. The soft edge is appropriate for use where the transition between sky and foreground is indeterminate, such as images featuring mist, fog, or the tops of trees. This filter is made of a shockproof optical glass and features multicoating for optimal light transition without added coloration. In addition, it has scratchproof and waterproof resistance coating, making it ideal for use in harsh environments and for easy cleanup.

VARIABLE ND
by Schneider Optics & Revar Cine
4 x 5.65" - 2 stages required
Effect: 2 to 8+ stop (0.6 - 2.4) variable neutral density for reducing exposure
. How: Combine the usage of the Circular Rota-Pola with the Linear Polarizer in a second stage, creating a VND. The slim Linear Pola can easily be stacked in the same filter stage as a slim Firecrest IRND filter, allowing the VND to be used in it's lower density range. From Revar Cine: The Linear Pol MC is matched to our circular polarizers to allow for neutral variable ND when combined.
POLARIZING FILTERS

CIRCULAR ROTA-POLA
by Revar Cine
4 x 5.65" rota-tray with Schneider Optics 138mm Circular Polarizer
Effect: reduces specified reflections & glare - pair with LINEAR POLA for VARI-ND
. From Schneider Optics: Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage. A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

LINEAR POLARIZER MC
by Revar Cine
4 x 5.65" - 2mm
Effect: reduces linearly-polarized light reflections from horizontal surfaces - pair with ROTA-POLA for VND
. From Revar Cine: Military spec polarizer with efficiency well beyond other brands of polarizer. Made with premium Schott B270 glass for superior resolution and flatness. The Linear Pol MC is matched to our circular polarizers to allow for neutral variable ND when combined. This nonrotating filter can be used with the Revar Cine 4 x 5.65" 138mm Rota-Tray to make a 2 to 8-stop variable ND. [This slim filter can be stacked with a Firecrest IRND filter in a single stage, freeing up a stage for diffusion or other creative filtration.]
CLOSE-UP FILTERS

+0.5 DIOPTER
by Revar Cine +1/2
